If Liverpool weren’t already cursing missing out on Alexis Sanchez,
they surely will be now after it emerged that the Reds actually offered
Barcelona more money than Arsenal.
According to Spanish daily, Sport,
Brendan Rodgers’ side outbid the Gunners by £3million in the summer,
but the Chilean striker pleaded with Barca to allow him to move to the
Emirates for a reduced cost.
Having finally completed his £32million switch to the Gunners,
Sanchez has established himself as a firm fans’ favourite and been
compared to Liverpool’s former hero Luis Suarez, who was sold to Barca
for £65m.
Sanchez has scored 10 in 16 appearances so far for Arsenal, while
Liverpool’s strikers continue to toil in front of goal, with new
arrivals Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert yet to register a single
league strike between them this season.
After missing out on Sanchez in the summer, Reds boss Rodgers said: ‘He’s a fantastic player and would have suited us.
‘His profile would have been great but it was not to be and we move on.
‘Lots of players are really impressed by what we are doing as a club and really excited about coming to Liverpool.
‘It wasn’t due to a lack of ambition by the club.
‘It was about where the player and his family wanted to choose to live.’
