Connect with People

Several years ago, my wife and l attended a birthday reception.
lt was for one of my mentors and it was full of dignitaries from all walks of life. But my mentor made a statement that we have referred to over the years.
He said, “My greatest assets in life have been people and my greatest
challenges have also come from people. That struck me.



We human beings are created for connection and not for isolation. That is just the way we are. We are born into families and within the family we begin to develop our social skills. It is in the family that you learn how to deal with differences because people are different.
When things go wrong in relationships, it is so easy to put the blame on others. But as long as we blame others, we never make progress in building relationships.

If building relationships will add to our success, then we need to acquire relationship skills. We need to know how to communicate and how to make people comfortable in our presence. And we should know how to be a source of joy and not a source of pain to somebody else.
