Real Madrid and Schalke played in one of the
most extraordinary games in Champions League history last night. The
German side nearly became the first in the competition's history to turn
around a 2-0 home first leg loss to go through.
At the final whistle Schalke had won 3-4 and come within a goal of knocking out the European Champions on away goals. Fans at the Bernabeu were none too pleased with their sides performance, especially after the weekend loss to Athletic that left them in second place in the league behind rival Barcelona, and responded by waving white handkercheifs- a sign of fans disgust in Spain.
Madrid were only saved from a humiliating exit from the Champions League through three moments of individual excellent, one from Karim Benzema and two, unsurprisingly from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo was very obviously annoyed with the side's performance and towards the end was seen to mouth to Benzema; "This is embarrassing."
After the match Ronaldo's bad mood continued and he ran through the mix zone, the area where journalists can get interviews with players, saying he was not talking to the press until after the season. The Portuguese superstar ran through claiming; "No hablo hasta final de temporada” – ‘I won’t talk again until the end of the season."
