In Thierry Henry's time at Arsenal the North London club were a real Premier League force winning the title twice. Since the French striker left things have not gone as well and now the legendary player has issued a warning to his former club.
Arsenal last won the title in 2004 so with this season looking like an unlikely year for them to stop the rot that will make it 11 years since the Gunners last won the title. Until last summer Arsenal had gone nine years without a trophy until they finally won the FA Cup in May beating Hull City in the final. Henry, speaking ahead of the France vs Brazil friendly this evening, has warned his former club that they must not go as long as Liverpool before their next title success.
Liverpool were dominant in the 80's when it came to winning the league but after winning the league in 1990, before it was even the Premier League (yes there was football), the Merseyside club have had 25 barren years. For a while it looked like Brendan Rodgers' side might stop the drought last year but they finished second.
Speaking to L'Equipe Henry, Arsenal's top goalscorer of all-time, said; "If I had said to you, in 1990, that Liverpool FC would not win the title for the next 25 years, you would have thought me very ill. "I don't want the same thing to happen to Arsenal. It is now 11 years."
Henry was at least optimistic that Arsene Wenger's side wouldn't have to wait as long as Liverpool adding; "This year, we are not so far away. Apart from the first leg against Monaco, they are going in the right direction but they without doubt dropped too many points at the start of the season. But I think this squad can win the title in the years to come.”
Henry is now a coach with Arsenal's youth team and many believe he will be a future manager at the club, at least the future players will know what is required from them.
