Manchester United XI vs Arsenal without Blind and De Gea

During a season of great upheaval Daley Blind was beginning to look like Manchester United’s calm head.

He wasn’t giving match-winning performances but quietly keeping things ticking along with his neat passing and composure.

But now Manchester United will have to do without him too. Daley Blind has damagel medial ligaments and could be out for the next few games at least. Certainly for Arsenal.

So how do Manchester United rearrange this time? Carrick is back after injury but, with so few central defenders fit, he may have to slot in at the back against Arsenal.

Louis van Gaal has to make a decision about whether to go with Chris Smalling and either Blackett or McNair in a very inexperienced back line, or pop Carrick in there.
If Carrick was deployed in defence then Manchester United can either play with Fletcher and Fellaini in front of the defence or bring Herrera back in to the fold and perhaps revert to the midfield diamond.

Actually, we think that LvG may stick with a 4-2-3-1 but play Herrera in a withdrawn role alongside Fellaini against a slick Arsenal attack. This means a more experienced and semi-reliable defensive pairing in Carrick and Smalling.

It’s a case for desperate measures for LvG at the moment in defence and midfield. But he should still be able to put out a pretty decent line up next Saturday.

Here’s our XI. Manchester United fans: thoughts?
