Call us crazy but, without wishing to put the kiss of death on this
one, we think that Manchester United are going to come through their
first big test of the campaign with flying colours.
Even at this
early stage this is a season-defining game. Win and the confidence will
be coursing through the veins ahead of another crunch clash with
Manchester City the following weekend. It will give this new team belief
that it can put a run together.
Lose and the gap will be 13
points – insurmountable even at this stage – and will leave the team and
the supporters feeling like it’s going to be another season of one step
forward and two back.
But the omens appear good for Manchester
United. Loic Remy pulled up with a groin injury in The Champions League
on Tuesday and Diego Costa is apparently struggling. But we all know
what Jose Mourinho is like. He has reportedly ruled Costa out
of the United game but We would still be surprised if he didn’t make
the squad for Sunday. Expect the ‘Costa travels with squad to
Manchester’ headlines imminently.
But if they are indeed both injured Chelsea will have to start with
Didier Drogba – one of the greatest players in Premier League history
but way past his best now. Manchester United will be full of confidence
if he is named as the main striker for the clash.
As for
Manchester United the main injury concern surrounds Angel di Maria who
hurt his leg on Monday. Without him United lose so much of their
penetration and ability to get behind defences. United fans will pray
that he is fit.
It should be a classic encounter. Manchester United fans: is this one winnable?
